Review: Solomun +live with Paul Kalkbrenner

Last Thursday 9th of July, Destino Ibiza welcomed its new party, Solomun +Live. The Serbian DJ, a regular presence at Pacha and Cap Martinet’s resort, will be in Destino every other Thursday for 6 weeks (alternating with Luciano & friends’ party), presenting a guest each week, that will perform a live set.

For the opening party, David August was the invited guest but he cancelled at the last minute for personal reasons. The substitute had to rise to the occasion and he was none other than Paul Kalkbrenner. The German is one of those artists that you have to enjoy on stage at least once in your lifetime. His amount of productions and remixes is huge, although his detractors argue that he tends to repeat his most popular songs

In fact, this is just one of the reasons why so many people enjoys Kalkbrenner: everybody wants to dance with ‘Sky and sand’.

Solomun made the perfect warm-up with a low bpm’s deep house, ideal to enjoy the early evening . The music/rhythm gradually gained intensity as Kalkbrenner’s turn get closer.

The audience was very much looking forward to an spectacular show. It was the only visit this summer of the german DJ and the expectations were set very high.

After initial few minutes of sound problems, Paul Kalkbrenner left sound ‘Cloud River’, the first single of ‘7’, his new album that will be released next August. Also, other advances like ‘Feed Your Head’, that makes use of vocals from White Rabbit, a classic of Jefferson Airplane of 1967

With a fading sun, the German took off his sunglasses and, with a half-smile in anticipation of what was next, he gave us his huge success ‘Sky and Sand’. Crazed crowd, screams and hands up…..It is overwhelming the communion that this anthem generates right after listening the firsts beats.

From then on, the set went through darker paths, exploring the techno pieces of his discography with his characteristic epic approach and generating the best moments of the show with the well-known ‘Berlin Calling’, ‘Revolte’ or ‘Alter Kamuffel’.

After one hour and a half, Kalkbrenner closed his set with the emotional ‘Aaron’, the icing on a cake that left no one indifferent.

With a wowed audience, Solomun got back to stage to perform a closing show of nearly two hours, demonstrating that he is in the best shape ever

After such a succesful opening party, we are really looking forward to the next Solomun +live. Next party, Thursday 23 of July, with the participation of Âme, the owner of Innervisions.
